Wood stains are used to achieve coloured effects on raw, sanded wood surfaces. These surfaces must then be protected with an appropriate lacquer.

The original meaning of the term “to stain” meant to change the colour of the wood by a chemical process.

The designation “to stain” is still used but today the term means to stain using dyes and/or pigments which lie on the surface of the wood; the wood is dyed.
